Police in Kathmandu arrested 46 individuals on Wednesday evening at the Gongabu-based New Bus Park for harassing passengers and forcibly pulling their bags, officials said. The arrests were carried out by a joint team from the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, and the New Bus Park Police Post.
According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the detained included taxi drivers, hotel operators, and hotel staff who were troubling passengers arriving in the capital from various parts of the country. The individuals were reportedly engaging in suspicious activities while forcing passengers to hand over or manage their luggage.
Police activity is part of the continued effort to increase safety and security within New Bus Park, one of the most busy transport facilities in Kathmandu. Officers emphasized that passenger harassment and random interference with luggage have been long-standing concerns for commuters and travelers.
Authorities said that the crackdown would continue, and they are committed to maintaining law and order at the park. These arrests serve as a warning to any person who may attempt to disrupt or take advantage of passengers.
Kathmandu Police have requested that taxi drivers, hotels and other businesses serving the area maintain compliance with the law and treat all passengers with dignity and respect. Travelers have welcomed the action, hoping for a safer and more organized experience at one of the city’s primary transit points.
Police officials said further operations are planned in the coming days to deter harassment and ensure public safety in other crowded areas of Kathmandu. The authorities have also encouraged passengers to report any misconduct to the police immediately.
Due to the crackdown on petty crime and misconduct in areas routinely visited by both tourists and locals, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police continues to conduct extensive patrols and monitoring at transport hubs. In an effort to prevent repeat occurrences of crime, regular patrols will continue.
The community has been voicing its concerns for a long time regarding harassment at the larger bus terminals, which was noticed during this operation and played a part in the success of the operation. With a successful operation under the belt, the Police are hoping to instill confidence in the public and improve the safety of their commutes.
