In Palpa, Ward 5 of Rampur Municipality established Rampur Senior Citizens School as an opportunity for the elderly citizens of this community to promote their knowledge while also promoting cultural heritage. The Rampur Senior Citizens School, located in Ramghat, will promote intergenerational learning and allow senior citizens to engage in and remain socially active and respectful within their communities.
The Rampur Senior Citizens School was collaboratively funded through federal, provincialand local support, with costs associated with building at Rs12.6 million. Additional structures include a teacher’s residence, a senior citizens center, accommodation facilities, and an exercise hall. Traditional tools such as dhiki and janto for grain processing have been installed to facilitate hands on learning.
According to Mayor Raman Bahadur Thapa, the school will act as a hub where older generations can transfer skills, crafts, and traditional knowledge to youth. Deputy Mayor Bal Kumari Thapa added that products created by senior citizens, like handmade cotton wicks, leaf plates, and other crafts, will be marketed through the municipality-run Koseli Ghar. Students from local schools will also visit the facility to learn about traditional skills and cultural values.
The school provides transport via a school bus for seniors from all ten wards, beginning with those along the Kaligandaki Corridor. Daily routines include religious discourses, bhajan-kirtan, yoga, meditation, and demonstrations of household skills. Health services and recreational activities have been integrated to ensure a supportive environment. Buddhi Prakash Regmi, chairperson of the school management committee, emphasised the importance of operating the school in a senior-friendly manner and paying attention to their needs and sentiments.
The Operational Board consists of 11 local community members who manage the day-to-day activities of the Rampur Senior Citizens School. Through the activities of the Operational Board, all community members will ensure that the seniors can engage in active learning through their knowledge and expertise, while also benefiting from the knowledge and experiences of younger generations.
